The YMCA martial-arts program was originally founded on the following 5 tenets, as depicted in the TKD Encyclopedia, a publication by ITF, the International Tae Kwon Do Federation:

  1. Courtesy
  2. Integrity
  3. Perseverance
  4. Self Control
  5. Indomitable Spirit

It is important to understand that such social and human values are universal to all styles and to humanity at large. They were most probably adapted by ITF's late General Choi from what the Chinese refer to as the 10 Martial Moralities.

With the above being stated, we still choose to call these tenets the “Tenets of Tae Kwon Do (TKD)”, in honor of the program’s long past history in TKD, and in rememberance of the program's founder, the late Holly Garber.

Today, our current team of karate instructors continues striving to instill these values in our children and karate students of all ages. The development of self-confidence and strength of character is also a priority in our program. Therefore, our classes aim at covering much more than physical training and skills; they aim at strengthening the body, cultivating the mind and nurturing the spirit.
