AN AFTER-SCHOOL KARATE PROGRAM
OPEN TO AGES 6 AND ABOVE
Last updated on 1/28/2008

INTRODUCTION

We have been serving the Frederick community for over 10 years, and have witnessed the wonderful effects that martial arts training has on children. From discipline to self-confidence, improved physical and mental strengths, character development and more, karate training is truly and universally recognized to strengthen the body, develop the mind and nurture the spirit.

As part of our continuing efforts and initiatives to reach out to the community, Koryukan Frederick is proud to renew our partnership with Trinity School of Frederick for yet another year, and continue with our successful after-school enrichment karate program on location at the school.

NEW STUDENTS

Trinity students and parents are welcome to join the program at anytime during the school year. We are always open for both beginners and students with previous martial-arts experience. New students and parents, please click HERE for a "welcome note" from the program director.

HISTORY

The program kickstarted originally in September 2006 with 6 students, and has been in session since, including a summer program. However, as stated above, Trinity students and parents are welcome to join in at anytime during the school year.

We had a great start this school year!!! All students are well behaved and well mannered, a very positive reflection of the school, its teachers and principal. Our current students range between 6 and 13 y/o in age, and their levels vary from beginners to students with some experience.

SCHEDULE

Classes are one-hour long, and are being offered twice a week as follows:
    MONDAY    4:30PM – 5:30PM
    WEDNESDAY 4:30PM – 5:30PM

Please note that offering one karate class per week is not deemed adequate, as students will have a tendency to forget what is learned. Offering three classes (or more) per week has certain advantages. However, school kids may be involved in several other sports and extra-curricular activities, where not only schedules can quickly become hectic and overwhelming for both kids and parents, but also the amount of energy and focus needed.

Based on my lifetime experience as a student of martial arts, and based on my experience in teaching students of all ages over the past eight years, I recommend two karate classes per week, which will promote proper karate learning while maintaining a good balance with other aspects of students’ lives.

Based on the same experience, I do not recommend long breaks from training, such as the three-month summer break. For this reason our school is willing to offer classes throughout the calendar year, not only the academic school year. This can be in the form of continuing regular classes, specialized summer camps, or a combination of both. This may be discussed with the school and the student/parent body later on in the school year.

CLASS CANCELLATIONS

Karate classes will be cancelled on days:
- of early dismissal because of inclement weather.
- of afternoon snow/inclement weather, since Trinity School cancels all after-school activities on such days
- where school is closed.

Following a class cancellation, a make-up class will be scheduled at the YMCA branch, typically on the Friday that follows.

Future class cancellations:

UNIFOR MS AND OTHER TRAINING EQUIPMENT

UNIFORM

We do not require students to purchase uniforms in the first month of training. Only if they enjoy karate and choose to pursue further training will we ask that they wear a traditional karate uniform to be purchased through our school.

The cost for a student uniform is $35 plus tax.

Training uniforms were initially designed in Japan in the late 19th century by Judo’s pioneer Jigoro Kano. Karate was established as a Japanese art only in 1933, and shortly afterwards adopted Judo's uniform, adapting it and improving it over time for the comfort and ease of training.

Since the 1930s, white uniforms have become an integral part of our wonderful tradition. The various uniform colors one observes nowadays are only a product of business practices and Western fashion statements.

SPARRING EQUIPMENT

Sparring gear is not required at the beginning of training. As students advance, and after no less than six months to one year of training (depending on the individual), they will be required to purchase safety gear for sparring purposes.

ORGANIZATION

Our school is proud to be a member of the prestigious International Ryukyu Karate-Jutsu Research Society, and its official representative in the State of Maryland.

STYLE AND CURRICULUM

Our children's program is based on the principles of Old-style Okinawan karate, a.k.a. Koryu Uchinadi. It is geared towards developing functional spontaneity against habitual acts of physical violence, while instilling social and moral values in our youth, developing self-confidence, strong personalities and indomitable spirits.

As we stated above, universally, karate training strengthens the body, develops the mind and nurtures the spirit.

We have an established and well-proven curriculum, conveyed in a building-block fashion, and based on sound pedagogical principles. Our outcomes are well defined, and our training methods and methodologies are geared towards those outcomes, and established accordingly. We are truly excited about the opportunity to have our staff introduce karate to your children and to the Trinity family at large.

For further information on the curriculum, our style of karate and our background, please visit the various sections of this website.

Also, you are certainly welcome to visit Koryukan Frederick's base-school operating at the Frederick YMCA on North Market Street, and observe any of our classes.

PREVIOUS LEARNING RECOGNITION

We do welcome students with previous experiences from different martial-arts schools. In most cases, we will honor their rank according to our PLR policies (Previous Learning Recognition).

WAIVER AND EMERGENCY FORMS

Koryukan Frederick and Trinity school do require a waiver form for every student, completed and signed by a legal guardian. Our karate school also requires an emergency form to be kept on file and on location.

SUMMER CAMPS

For three years in a row, we have been conducting summer camps at the Frederick County YMCA. We are certainly open to the idea of organizing and leading karate summer camps at the Trinity School of Frederick.

ADULT-ONLY CLASSES

Old-style karate was initially developed as a simple, effective and brutal tool to negotiate common acts of physical violence, in civil environments, not military/martial ones, contrary to popular belief. Beginning in the late 19th century and in the 20th century, it was adapted to various youth-oriented modern arts (styles), and in most cases sports.

Modern karate is therefore only a product of the 20th century. However, the original intent of old-style is different from what is commonly taught nowadays, and the misconceptions are not only common, but enormous. This is not to undermine the great benefits of youth development, sportsmanship and all the holistic benefits of modern karate.

Old-style karate is certainly geared towards adults and adults only. We are a group of serious international researchers and practitioners who specialize in old-style karate and effective self-defense. With our unique specialty, extensive training and lifetime experience, we currently offer adult-only training at two locations in Frederick.

It will be our utmost pleasure to offer adult-karate to the Trinity school community at large, both parents and staff.
